3 Garage Doors Issues You Shouldn't Ignore

As time goes by, your garage door ages and some of its essential components fail. Some common problems with garage doors are easy to fix, especially if you address them early. However, if you ignore them, they can escalate and necessitate costly repairs or replacement.

Here are three garage door issues that you should never ignore.

Keypad Doesn't Work

Not all garage doors have a keypad. However, most modern garage doors have a keypad to eliminate the need for a remote or keys. This component enhances security as only people with a security code can access your home. And like other garage door components, the keypad can become faulty with time.

In such a case, your garage door won't open. Various reasons why the keypad fails include:

  • Dead batteries
  • Damages wires
  • Malfunctioning code
  • Incorrect pin
  • Poor connection between the buttons

Before anything, you should check if the batteries are dead. If they are, replace them and enter the keypad number again. On some occasions, you may need to program the keypad. You can check the manual to see how to do it yourself. If the problem is still doesn't go away, you need to consider professional garage door repair.

Motor Runs, but the Door Doesn't Move

Sometimes, when you press the button to close or open a garage door, the motor runs, but the door doesn't move at all. In other words, the opener sounds like it is running, but the chain, belt, or screw doesn't move.

There are two main reasons why garage doors behave like this. First, it might be a problem with the motor itself. The motor might have a broken gear or another part that needs to be repaired. Another issue could be the garage door failing to engage with the opener.

You can try and fix the problem yourself. Start by locating the emergency release and disengaging it. If the emergency release jams and fails to disengage completely, you need to call in a repair technician to repair it.

Garage Door Opening Unevenly

Sometimes, garage doors will start to close or open but start to malfunction halfway through. Most times, this problem indicates that the limits are off. Limits are the communication devices that tell the door when to open or close such that the motor fails to keep working.

If the problem is with the limits, you need to adjust them using a screw located in the motor. You can also check to see if anything is blocking the tracks. Since rollers are susceptible to rust, you can wipe them down to see if the issue goes away. If these two steps don't work, there could be a major problem that requires a professional diagnosis.

A faulty garage door can be a huge inconvenience. However, you can prevent most problems with garage doors through routine maintenance. If you experience any of these three issues, call a technician who can inspect and fix them.
